On Sunday, October fourteenth, 2001 at least a thousand activists converged at Copley Square, Boston to honor those lost on September eleventh. The events were called by United for Justice with Peace, to promote social and economic justice, and to oppose war "...no matter what reason or rhetoric is offered by politicians and the media" See their website for meeting times and vigils schedule. Freeman Z's Anniversary Report Editorial:
I began this project over a year ago after cofounding a statewide family magazine, dragged in by the stench of the 2000 freak show the corporate media package as "elections", I have seen faces smashed by batons and windows smashed by stones. I've seen people pepper-maced, shield-bashed, caged, corralled, and blasted with water cannon. I've been tear gassed thrice. I have been knocked over by a horse, (possibly the one who died that night of a heart attack.) I've been to D.C. and to Quebec City, to Harvard and Yale. I've seen witches, colonists, giant 2-headed monsters, and decorated war Veterans, men who fought and flew in the European and Pacific "Theatres", Viet Nam and the GulfOil War. I've seen the only candidate I could actually vote for in my life thrown out as a spectator from a corporately sponsored sham of a "debate" for the Nation's highest office. I've been unfairly and illegally thrown out of my own State House for trying to document a hearing on medical use of marijuana. (ACLU has a file on this) I've seen lots of police. Police on bicycles, police on cars, and on motorcycles, police with helmets and shields. Police dressed in black riot gear, with gas-masks, with sidearms, and shotguns and rifles.... And, yes, even Police with Donuts! From the Front Lines (Jump to pictures)
The FreemanZ com site has been visited well over 15,000 times, my photogaphs have been published in Peacework and the Utne Reader. I have returned to the fringes of FM radio, where I once perched as a Producer. I have cooperatively produced several websites to defend wildlife from abuse, to protect our children, our fighting troops and noncombatants from radioactive weapons, and to promote peace through action. Success!
Remember the Hippies? who led the nation out of a horrible and pointless war? Who smashed corruption and felt the sting of batons, tear gas, mace, ... and bullets? Remember the Yippies? Who brought the stock market to a halt and exposed the insanity of greed by tossing single dollar bills from the gallery? Who showed brilliant humor in times of crisis? Who ran a pig for President? Who ran "Nobody" for President? The Black Panthers? The Civil Rights Marchers? Medgar Evers? Deep Throat? Open Secret: The Hippies and Yippies were Correct
These are our heroes. Without these brave and committed warriors in search of truth, we would still have segregtion. Each of these movements and individuals knew that the fight must be carried on, and they entrusted that task to us. They trusted in us enough to lay down their lives for us. to abandon these struggles is to piss on their graves and our children's as well.
Thanks to all of you, from the Anarchists to the Police, we remain a living democracy. A special place where today's dissent provides the seeds of tomorrow's trends. Vietnam War Protestors and Veterans each took their casualties in the "civil" unrest of my childhood.Today we shame (but did not prosecute) MacNamara for his treacherous betrayal halfheartedly "fighting" an unjust and unwinnable war for industrial profit that split both nations. Now it's up to us
The values and even the most outrageous claims of the anti war, the civil rights and the hippy movements are now taken for granted, yet the mindset that revealed these truths is ridiculed. MacNamara confessed, Nixon resigned. The FBI did infiltrate and sabotage nonviolent Civil Rights Organizations, the Army really did intentionally irradiate our own men with a nuclear blast, ...and we all seem to agree that ...there was no "Magic Bullet."
Despite the experience of pulling aside our collective blinders, we continue today to deny the obvious. Our government appears to have set the Talliban up in the lucrative heroine trade in order to sell them weapons, yet we fight a domestic "Drug War", headed by a what? A "Czar"? We make eternally toxic uranium bullets to dispose of our nuclear power plant waste. It seems to be cancering noncombatants and our warriors as well.
We clearly have criminal and terroristic corporate psychotics at the helm. These traitors to the nation, humanity and natural law are truly monsters in the classic sense. Our monsters.
